Vote ‘Yes’ to enshrine ratios in law

Let's make sure ratios become law in Victoria in 2015

The Safe Patient Care (Nurse to Patient and Midwife to Patient) Bill 2015 has passed through the both houses of the Victorian Parliament.

There is just one hurdle to jump before nurse/midwife: patient ratios are enshrined in law for all nurses and midwives working in the public sector in Victoria.

In order for the Safe Patient Care Act (the Act) to become law, nurses and midwives who work under the Nurses and Midwives (Victorian Public Sector) (Single Interest Employers) Enterprise Agreement 2012-2016 (current enterprise agreement) must vote in a ballot.

The ballot, which will be held between 13 and 27 November 2015, is a vote to vary the current enterprise agreement to remove ratios so that they are legally in the Act and not an industrial instrument.

It is a simple one question ballot but it is one of the most important in Victorian nursing history.

Once ratios are made law, nurses and midwives will never have to fight for them during enterprise bargaining again.
