The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) congratulates federal MPs and Senators for their support of the Same-Sex Marriage (SSM) Bill which passed the Parliament late today.
Federal Secretary Lee Thomas said ANMF members are relieved that the country’s politicians had supported marriage equality.
“We’re pleased they’ve listened to the Australian public,” Ms Thomas said.
“This Legislation will see same-sex couples formally recognised - it finally puts an end to the discrimination against LGBTI Australians.
“After long-campaigning for reforms allowing SSM, the ANMF is delighted that our politicians have voted for a new, fairer law which affords same-sex couples the same rights as the rest of the community.
“Importantly, it also recognizes that discrimination against LGBTI Australians, who have suffered poorer health outcomes compared to other members of the community as a result of this discrimination, is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated.
“For our members in same-sex relationships, it’s been a long and emotional journey in fighting for this change to the law.
“The ANMF now looks forward to a new era of equality which ensures a ‘fair go’ for all Australians.”
The ANMF, with over 259,000 members, is the industrial and professional voice for nurses, midwives and assistants in nursing in Australia.
