The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (National Board) is urging nurses and midwives to look out for an email reminding them to renew registration by 31 May.
Over 340,000 nurses and/or midwives with general or non-practising registration are due to renew their registration with the National Board.
‘The 2013 renewal campaign is now open,’ National Board Chair Anne Copeland said.
As part of the campaign, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), on behalf of the National Board, is sending out the first in a series of reminders to nurses and midwives with a registered email address.
‘More than 99.5 per cent of nurses and midwives have provided an email address but emails to over six per cent bounce back undelivered,’ Ms Copeland said.
It is important that nurses and midwives make sure AHPRA has their current contact information so they don’t miss future email and hard copy reminders to renew.
To update contact details using AHPRA’s secure online service, nurses and midwives can visit www.ahpra.gov.au:
- go to the bottom of the home page
- click on Update Contact Details under Services for Practitioners
- use their user ID and secure password, and
- follow the prompts.
Last year over 90 per cent of nurses and midwives renewed their registration online and on time.
‘This was a fantastic result and it shows how quick and easy online renewal is,’ Ms Copeland said.
Anyone who experiences difficulties using the online service can phone AHPRA’s Customer Service Team on 1300 419 495 and a team member will talk them through the process.
Ms Copeland also reminded nurses and midwives to carefully read the National Board requirements for registration renewal.
‘Make sure you understand the declarations you are required to make regarding mandatory registration standards. Giving false or misleading information is grounds for the National Board to refuse renewal of registration,’ Ms Copeland said.
‘We may ask you to give information in support of your declarations. In particular, this year, we are taking the next steps towards auditing nurses and midwives’ compliance with Board-approved registration standards for recency of practice and continuing professional development.’
Under the National Law1, all registered nurses and midwives are responsible for renewing their registration on time each year.
