Senate establishes inquiry into hospital funding cuts

Thursday 7th February, 2013

The Australian Senate today voted in favour of a motion from Greens Senator, Dr Richard Di Natale, to conduct an inquiry hospital funding cuts.

“This Senate Inquiry will help end the blame game and bring some much needed transparency and accountability into the recent cuts to hospital funding,” said Senator Di Natale.

“Every couple of days another hospital announces that government funding cuts have forced them to cancel operations, close down their emergency departments and fire staff.

“The Federal government blames the states and the states point the finger right back at the Commonwealth but no one is taking responsibility.

“If nobody can be held to account for cuts to essential services like this, then no level of government will stand up and fix the problem.

“This inquiry will give us an opportunity to hear from communities around the country who are feeling the real world impact of cuts.

“We will hear evidence from all the stakeholders involved, determine who needs to take responsibility for fixing the problem and make clear recommendations for fixing it.”
