The Competency standards for the advanced enrolled nurse* are an important resource and guide for nurses. The increasing employment of enrolled nurses in a range of practice settings as well as an increasing capacity of enrolled nurses to undertake a broader range of responsibilities has prompted the development of these competencies for advanced enrolled nursing practice.
This publication will assist and support enrolled nurses as they expand the scope of their practice and work in a range of specialty areas. These standards capture the special role that advanced enrolled nurses play in health care and will assist nurses and the community to communicate the skills, knowledge and attitudes
that are required for this type of nursing care.

Competency standards for the advanced registered nurse
Advanced registered nurses are experienced, knowledgeable and competent nurses who use evidence for practice, take responsibility for complex situations, show leadership in clinical and professional settings, contribute to effective team work, and focus on improving the health of individuals and groups.
This latest edition of the Competency standards for the advanced registered nurse builds on the important earlier work that saw these standards widely used to inform the development of specialty competency standards and postgraduate specialty education for these nurses. In the eight years since the initial publication of the Competency standards for the advanced registered nurse, global socio-economic and political trends and issues, and advances in knowledge and technology have changed the landscape of health delivery and impacted on the expectations of the roles of health professionals. It is within this changed health care context that the latest version of the Competency standards for the advanced registered nurse is created. These revised competency standards for the advanced registered nurse are an important resource and guide for registered nurses and help to demonstrate the special role that advanced registered nurses play in contemporary health care.
Competency Standards for Nurses in General Practice
The Competency Standards for Nurses in General Practice provide a useful framework that reflect nursing practice in the general practice setting. The project to develop competency standards for nurses in general practice was funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing and managed by the Australian Nursing Federation. A project team from the University of South Australia and Royal College of Nursing Australia developed the competency standards.
