ANMF Statement on Middle East Conflict

31 October 2023

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) condemns the escalating conflict and suffering in the Middle East and expresses hope and solidarity for all Palestinian and Israeli nurses and midwives who continue to carry out their duties under such dangerous and extraordinary circumstances.

We must all acknowledge and show our respect and appreciation for their courage and commitment in delivering care to those who have been injured, wounded and are unwell.

At the ANMF’s Biennial National Conference (BNC) held on 12 and 13 October, our delegates from around the country endorsed a Resolution expressing support for all international nurses and midwives in the face of increasing global wars and conflicts.

The Conference highlighted Palestinian, Israeli and Ukrainian nurses and midwives, with the Resolution including an important message of hope and solidarity for lasting peaceful solutions to all wars and conflicts.

The ANMF supports calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Israeli-Hamas conflict, the release of all hostages and for food, medical and aid supplies to be allowed into Gaza, as a matter of urgency to ensure that humanitarian agencies can deliver to those in dire need.

On behalf of our members, we reiterate our heartfelt condolences to those around the world who who have been hurt and suffered, and continue to suffer, as a result of the conflict in the Middle East and we extend our support for a lasting, peaceful outcome in the Region.

The ANMF remains committed to seeking peace and safety for all peoples and for all nurses and midwives who are trying to care for their communities in the midst of terrible conflicts.

The ANMF, with over 321,000 members, is the industrial and professional voice for nurses, midwives and carers in Australia.
